Clay for Life
Artist Statement
“If such a rose could speak…, What would she say?”
King, A Little Chaos, 2015
A gardenerette is a female gardener. Picture Kate Winslet in A Little Chaos and you can start to imagine the role and responsibilities, the process, growth and the resulting bloom.
Julie Winn creates beautiful handmade porcelain “blooms” which are high fired sculptures sometimes with a mere gentle dew of clear glaze.
Julie is inspired by the 17th century Meissen works which are exemplary expressions of European porcelain. Julie loves the colours, glazes and forms as well as the impressive artisanship of the makers.
Many look at function when discussing ceramics. These works are about the function of beauty captured in porcelain. They reflect nature, human skill and the value given to a perfect resonance of nature when a bloom is at its best.
A Porcelain Gardenerette, Julie hand forms sprays of complex plant- inspired structures using white and black clay, in arrangements that overflow vessels reminiscent of grand Victorian arrangements.
